Our fully accessible art project, Art Beyond Vision, is running again for 2024/25!

Following a very successful programme funded by Wakefield Council's Culture Grants during 2023/24, we are thrilled to announce that we have secured funding from elsewhere to continue our Art Beyond Vision programme in 2024/25! As before, the classes will be run by local artist Ruth Fones, assisted by Ania and Claire, our two creative advisors and facilitators who have lived experience of sight loss themselves.

Ruth explains more about the sessions in this video.

These classes are open to everyone with sight loss, irrespective of whether you have previously been creative, or have never done anything like this before. You will be given the skills and materials to create work to a high standard that is original to you. Participants in the pilot project are welcome to attend again to further develop their skills.

The classes focus on techniques that anyone can engage with, no matter what level of usable vision you have. We have several group participants who have no vision at all. Techniques include (but are not limited to) tactile drawing, origami, collage, embossing, basic stitch techniques, macrame. We have even found ways of making painting and watercolours accessible for those who want to have a go.

We have also run three fully accessible ceramics workshops in partnership with our friends at The Art House.

Art Beyond Vision is running again until July 2025. We meet every Thursday afternoon during term time. Further details can be found in our newsletters, or by ringing the office on 01924 215555.

Feedback from previous Art Beyond Vision participants:

“As I have been recently registered visually impaired, it gave me insight into my disability and what was possible.”

“Gives me a better understanding of how artists do things.”

“Been fun and learnt a lot. Enjoyed meeting new people.”

“After lockdown, social interaction is even more important. This is vital to counteract feelings of isolation.”
