DreamTime Creative and the Forgotten Women of Wakefield are delighted to be offering, as part of Historic England funding for their Beyond Braille project, 2 FREE workshops in July this year. Come and find out about the history of Wakefield District Sight Aid, where it began, who started it, and why those women played a fundamental and vital role in preventing blindness in infants.

Join the Forgotten Women of Wakefield team at one of two workshops to hear about the history of the Wakefield Blind Society, which later became Wakefield District Sight Aid.
Formed in 1869 two influential women, Emily Fennell and Edith Wright, went on to change the course of history locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally with their campaign to make ophthalmia neonatorum a notifiable disease and led the way in establishing nationwide 'Workshops for the Blind'.
You will learn about the challenges the women faced, the people who supported them (and those who didn't) and will be able to respond to what you are learning with paper weaving, badge making and painting on old records, anything you feel you want to capture from their story whilst sharing yours.
CoffeeWrite has two entrances, one on Marygate and one on Silver Street. Our workshops will take place on the upper level, accessed by Silver Street making them accessible to all.
There is no cost to these workshops, but we ask that you buy a coffee from CoffeeWrite to support this small independent business.
There are two opportunities to join us on Tuesday 22 July:
Session 1 - 1pm to 3pm
Session 2 - 4pm to 6pm
These workshops are offered free of charge, thanks to funding from Historic England. Booking is online via Eventbrite, but if this is difficult for you, please call the office and we will be happy to book your place for you.
